Roles:
B.L.O.B. is an educational browser-based demo that teaches the stages of hematopoiesis from a microscopic perspective. Designed as a gamified learning experience, it blends simple controls with clear visual cues so players learn by sequencing, identifying, and connecting function to form.
B.L.O.B. was developed through an iterative instructional design process, i.e. Analysis > Prototype >Playtest > Iterate, where we defined measurable learning goals, storyboarded interactions, and used principles like segmenting and progressive hints to keep concepts digestible. We play-tested with students (n≈20) to inform pacing, hints, and difficulty curve.
My role involved art concepting, game design, user-testing, UI layout, and narrative scripting.
Development is in-progress for a full version of the game exploring all hematopoietic cell lineages.
Co-developed with Yolande Marie-Prain and a special thanks to Meredith Herman, DO for her scientific expertise.
Learning Objectives:
- Sequence key stages of hematopoiesis from stem cell to differentiated neutrophil
- Recognize hallmark features of development cell stages
- Connect form and function of cellular features
How Learning Maps to Play:
- Activity and Outcome: Drag-and-drop staging and quick prompts demonstrate understanding of order and features
- Feedback: Immediate "try again" cues and scaffolded hints support retrieval without overloading.
Development is still in-progress for a full version exploring all hematopoietic lineages and expanded assessments.
